Shopify's AI Channel Landscape

In the past year and a half, Shopify’s AI initiatives have been sporadic: Sidekick, Agentic Storefronts, UCP, Campaign Autopilot—each seems like an independent release at first glance. However, when laid out in a diagram, it becomes clear: product data, sales channels, transaction protocols, and operational execution have all been addressed. This is not just “another AI feature”; it is about building AI conversations as a long-term channel infrastructure.

Catalog as the Entry Ticket

Let’s start with the bottom layer. Shopify Catalog organizes fields such as product titles, prices, and inventory into structured data for distribution to AI channels. When the Agent recommends products, it relies on this data; products with incomplete data essentially do not exist in AI conversations.

The official blog provided some numbers on June 18: traffic brought to Shopify stores by AI increased eightfold year-on-year in Q1, orders sourced from AI searches rose nearly thirteen times, and the order frequency of new customers from AI channels is close to double that of other channels. These three figures form the foundation of the entire landscape.

For example, consider an independent store selling handmade ceramics with over 200 SKUs. The sizes, glazes, and microwave safety of cups and plates were previously explained solely through detailed page copy. After integrating into the AI channel, the Agent answers such questions based on the structured specification fields in the Catalog, not the page layout. If fields are missing, the Agent either won’t promote your products or will fabricate an answer for you. The former results in lost sales, while the latter leads to customer complaints.

There is also a questionable claim: some third parties say that products synchronized via the Catalog see conversion rates double in AI conversations; I couldn’t verify the original text on the official page, so I do not endorse this.

AI Chats Entered the Backend Sales Channel List

Agentic Storefronts made its debut in the Winter ‘26 Edition (December 10, 2025), and the Spring ‘26 Edition (June 17, 2026, with over 150 updates) established it as a legitimate channel. Now, in Shopify’s navigation, AI Chats is listed under Sell anywhere, alongside Online, POS, and Shop App—its channel status is officially recognized.

The help documentation is straightforward: products enter the AI channel through Shopify Catalog, while on the Google side, it utilizes the Google & YouTube sales channels or Google Merchant Center, covering Google AI Mode and Gemini. Merchants can select which AI channels to connect to. Currently, it covers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Copilot. The official blog also mentions that merchants without a store can initially use the Catalog to send products into the AI channel, with the store being set up later. We have previously written two articles on the integration details and operational practices for ChatGPT Ads, so I won’t repeat that here.

UCP Hands Over Checkout Interfaces to External Agents

The most interesting aspect lies at the transaction layer. On January 11, 2026, Shopify released the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The core mechanism is capability negotiation: Agents pull the merchant’s capability profile from the discovery address, both parties declare the products, payment, and fulfillment capabilities they support, and if they reach an agreement, they can converse directly without needing to hold integration meetings.

The transport layer is interchangeable: REST, GraphQL, JSON-RPC, A2A, MCP are all acceptable; changing the transport does not affect business logic. Shop Pay is built-in, payment processors can negotiate, and AP2 is also supported. In Spring ‘26, there will also be a Shopify AI Toolkit for developers, packaging these Agent tools for developers. The documentation at shopify.dev/docs/agents contains tool-level details—such as the get_order MCP tool handling buyer inquiries like “Where is my order?” The order webhook is also in UCP format. Google’s developer blog has specifically written about UCP’s MCP binding, indicating that the Gemini side is taking this seriously.

What is given up externally is the entry point, while settlement, orders, payments, and fulfillment still operate within the Shopify ecosystem.

The AI in the Backend is Taking Over Operational Tasks

The fourth area of the landscape is inward-facing. Sidekick has been integrated into every page since Spring ‘26 and is now open to third-party apps. Campaign Autopilot, released on June 17, can create Meta and Microsoft Advertising accounts for merchants, run Shop Campaigns, and automate email—officially positioned as a virtual marketing team for brands that cannot afford outsourced operations.

Marketing execution is being moved to the backend, while the work of the marketers is being elevated. This is not friendly for agency companies, but it significantly lowers the barriers for small and medium-sized merchants.

For merchants, the immediate task is to clean up Catalog data: titles, specifications, inventory, and prices determine how well you are represented on the AI channel shelves. The interface team can review the UCP checkout documentation. The official hasn’t disclosed the traffic share of each AI channel, so hold off on budget allocation for now; focus on getting the data right.
