After August 26, Your Shopify Ad Conversions May Be "Invisible"

avatar jayce 04 Nov 2026

If you’re running Google Ads, it’s best not to rely solely on the ad backend in the coming days.

Because after August 26, 2026, a batch of non-Plus Shopify stores will complete the upgrade of the Thank You page and Order Status page. The pages themselves will still be accessible, and orders will still be processed, but some tracking scripts that were previously attached to the old pages may no longer function as they did before.

The most troublesome part is that this issue may not immediately throw an error. What you might see is simply a decrease in Google Ads conversions, a gap in GA4 purchases, or a sudden drop in ROAS. The store is still making sales, but the ad system seems to be “invisible” to these orders.

This is not just a reporting issue. For accounts relying on smart bidding, the absence of conversion signals can affect budget allocation and algorithm learning.

First, Clarify What Changes on August 26

According to Shopify’s official help center, non-Plus merchants need to upgrade the Thank You page and Order Status page before August 26, 2026. After this date, the custom methods on the old pages will be replaced by the new page system. The official upgrade guide also states that if the upgrade is not completed by this date, the pages will be auto-upgraded to the new version.

The risk is concentrated in one old area: Additional Scripts / ScriptTags.

Many older stores directly pasted the code for Google Ads, GA4, GTM, Meta Pixel, and affiliate tracking into the additional scripts in the checkout settings to trigger on the Thank You or Order Status pages. This method was common in the past and has indeed been used for many years.

However, the new Thank You / Order Status pages do not provide the same environment for these bare scripts to run as before. Shopify now recommends migrating tracking to official channels, Customer Events, Web Pixels, or apps compatible with the new pages. Shopify’s developer documentation also reminds that old ScriptTags will only work on non-Plus stores’ Order Status pages until August 26, 2026.

Why Ad Conversions May Be “Invisible”

After an order is completed, the ad platform needs to know which click led to that order, usually requiring a conversion event to be received at the time of purchase.

If your Google Ads purchase event relies solely on the gtag or GTM code in the old Thank You page, then after the page upgrade, if that code no longer executes, the link is broken:

  • Shopify backend: Orders appear normally.
  • User experience: The payment completion page displays normally.
  • Google Ads: May not receive the purchase.
  • GA4: Purchase events may decrease or have gaps.
  • Ad team: Thinks the ads suddenly performed poorly, but in reality, the signals are lost.

These types of issues are the easiest to misjudge. Because they are not as obvious as payment failures, 404 pages, or inventory anomalies. The business is still running; it’s just that the ad system’s feedback has gone silent.

Which Stores Should Check Immediately

If you meet any of the following criteria, it is recommended to check today:

  • The store is on a Basic, Shopify, Advanced, or other non-Plus plan.
  • Google Ads conversion tracking was manually installed several years ago.
  • You have pasted gtag, GTM, dataLayer, or conversion ID in the additional scripts.
  • Google Ads purchase, GA4 purchase, and Meta Purchase rely on the Thank You page trigger.
  • The store has changed agencies or ad managers several times, but no one can clarify where the conversion code is currently triggered.

Conversely, if you are already using the official Google & YouTube app and the conversion tracking is using Shopify’s Customer Events system, the risk is much lower. But don’t rely solely on impressions; it’s best to conduct a test order for confirmation.

5-Minute Self-Check: First, Find Where the Scripts Are

You don’t need to start by reconstructing the entire site tracking. First, clarify the current situation.

Shopify Admin → Settings → Checkout, find the corresponding checkout configuration, and check if there is a prompt to upgrade the Thank You and Order Status pages.

Then focus on three things:

  1. Check if there are any Google Ads, GTM, GA4, Meta, TikTok, or affiliate-related codes in the additional scripts.
  2. Check if there are any connected pixels or custom pixels in Customer Events.
  3. Check if the Google & YouTube app is installed and connected, and if the Google Ads account is correctly associated.

If there are tracking codes in the additional scripts and no corresponding alternatives in Customer Events, do not wait for the auto-upgrade to handle it.

How to Migrate Google Ads First

For standard Google Ads conversion tracking, prioritize using the official Google & YouTube app. The Google Ads help documentation is more direct regarding legacy configurations: If you are still using checkout.liquid, Order Status page additional scripts, or other old configurations, Google strongly recommends migrating to the Google-developed Google & YouTube app.

When migrating, don’t just do the “install app” step; at a minimum, confirm:

  • The Google & YouTube app is connected to the correct Google account.
  • The Google Ads account is linked, not just the Merchant Center.
  • The destination settings for key events like purchase, add to cart, and checkout started are correct.
  • The old handwritten conversion codes do not double count with the new events.

If you are using a complex GTM container that distributes to multiple ad platforms, you cannot simply copy the old container to the new page. You need to rewrite it according to Shopify Web Pixels / Customer Events’ event model, at least clarifying subscriptions for key events like checkout_completed.

Migration Principle: Use official channels where possible; for custom logic, place it in Customer Events / Web Pixels; do not continue to rely on old bare scripts.

Always Test Purchases Before and After Upgrades

Do not trust that “it should be fine” here. Ad conversion tracking only looks at results.

Before the upgrade, record a baseline:

  • The number of Shopify orders in the past 7 days.
  • The number of Google Ads purchase conversions in the past 7 days.
  • The number of GA4 purchase events in the past 7 days.
  • Whether there are any missing or duplicate prompts in Google Ads conversion diagnostics.

After the upgrade, at least conduct a real link test:

  1. Complete checkout with a test order.
  2. Confirm that the Thank You page and Order Status page display normally.
  3. Use Tag Assistant or Google Ads conversion diagnostics to see if events are triggered.
  4. Check if there are purchases in GA4 DebugView / real-time reports.
  5. Compare Shopify orders and ad platform conversions the next day to check for sudden gaps.

A Final Reminder for the Ad Team

After August 26, if Shopify orders do not drop but Google Ads conversions suddenly decline significantly, do not rush to dismiss the campaign.

First, check the tracking link: Has the Thank You page been upgraded? Are the additional scripts invalid? Is the Google & YouTube app correctly connected? Are there purchases in Customer Events? Are there any duplicates or omissions between the old code and new events?

The real danger lies in the team potentially making budget decisions based on incorrect data. Especially for ad strategies that heavily rely on conversion feedback, such as Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, and Performance Max, once the signal is interrupted, the optimization direction may go awry.

If your store hasn’t checked yet, do one thing today: open the Shopify backend, take screenshots of the additional scripts, Customer Events, and Google & YouTube app, and then run a test order.
